I love learning from other moms. How they do things. How they make it work. Why they do things the way they do. That’s why I love the idea of getting s glimpse into the lives of all kinds of moms. Tonight we do it again…
It’s my (Cassie) pleasure to introduce you to Maria, married homeschool momma to two, Grace 15 and Ashten 12. I met Maria a little over 7 years ago, back when we lived in Reno. We had started going to a wonderful church, Community Bible Church, in Reno. Maria and her husband Keller welcomed us with open arms. She was always kind, caring and someone I would go to for advice, as we welcomed our first child into the world. She is also someone I continue to go to for advice, most often about homeschool, but really about anything and everything! She is really a treasure and I can’t wait for you to hear about what a day in the life for a mom homeschooling a high schooler and middle schooler is like.
When does your day start? Between 6:30am- 7am
What is the first thing you do? Feed our dogs. They think they are my #1 priority in the morning. 😉 And then coffee!!!!!! ( I sure wish coffee was first!)
What’s your morning routine with the kids before school/work?
Kids get up at 7:15 am I give them time to sit and relax on the couch and we talk and spend time together. I also talk through our day and what we have planned.
8am – Everyone starts our chores and morning routine.
Kids clean their rooms, feed our chickens, unload the dishwasher and tidy the main bathroom, make breakfast and get dressed. We then begin school at 9am.
What is your Daily routine?
I am a really routined person. 🙂 My husband and I both are and I think it helps us keep our days running pretty smoothly and our kids thrive on routine as well.
I usually get up between 6:30- 7am. Get the dogs up and my husband gets up and makes coffee it is a nice time in the morning where it is quiet and we can just hang out and talk.
Get the kiddos up at 7:15 spend time with them and then start my routine.
While the kids begin their chores I start by making my bed and do a quick clean up in our bedroom. Get dressed and maybe do a quick work out if I have time or will walk later in the day.
General clean up of the living room and kitchen.
Usually start a load of laundry.
Then I go in our school room and clean up look at my calendar and on then I write out my to do list for the day.
Right before 9 I look at my son’s schedule and we map out his day and then several mornings a week I check in with my daughter about how her schedule is going and help her in anyway she needs. (she mainly runs her schedule and I help to advise when needed)
Once I get the kids going on school. I sit down at about 9:30am and the house is quiet and I read my bible and a devotional or book to grow in my faith and text a few of my close friends my verse of the day from my reading as well as a prayer request.
The rest of the day is spent doing daily chores, bills or emails and helping the kids with school and grading their school work. Between 2-3pm we are done with school and we have a quiet down time. When our kids were finished with naps as little kiddos we started quiet time and it has just stuck. I find I need 30 mins or so just to relax and rest before the next rush of the day happens. If we don’t have piano practice or errands or time with friends. Our normal routine is to begin cooking dinner at about 4:45pm and then my husband calls me on his way home from work and we just have a great time talking about our days on his way home. When he gets home it is family time. We eat dinner and watch a favorite show, play a game or read a book together as a family or have someone over for dinner. Several nights a week we go through a passage in the bible and talk about it. We are currently working through Proverbs.
When do you work out or do you work out? I really don’t like working out and wish I didn’t have to. This summer I realized I was no longer as strong as I had been in the past, so I made an effort to walk several times a week and/or do a HITT workout videos on other days. It doesn’t take to long and I feel so much better. I will either fit it in the morning, midday if the kids are in a great place working along.
How do you plan meals? This is an area I don’t do all that well in. 🙂 I have about 6-8 meals that I make all the time and then add in a few new meals every couple weeks. It keeps my grocery list really simple. I also have a saved grocery list on my computer and I can add or change what I need and generally know how much I will spend at the store and keeps us on budget.
When do you cook and how do you make it work?
I grew up in a cooking family and I really like to cook. I usually cook breakfast a few times a week for the family. The kids make their breakfast and their own lunches most of the time. I make simple easy and yummy dinners. I love to use my crockpot makes my day just feel better knowing most of dinner is cooking away all day. I tend to make food that can be done in 30 mins or less and then save the fun gourmet meals for when we have people over.
How do you meal plan with kids sports and practices (like what kind of meals do you do on those days)
Crock pot is the best thing I have found for the busy nights. I start it either in the morning or at lunch and it is ready and easy. Throw a bag salad together and in a few mins we have dinner. 🙂 And then there is always Papa Murphy’s for those busy nights you just don’t want to cook.
How do you keep school lunches and snacks healthy?
I try to buy healthy options and choices for the kids. I don’t buy a lot of prepackaged food. We love to snack on nuts, salami and cheese and fresh veggies and fruit. My son love crackers and humus. But of course we will buy our kids favorite chips like Doritos, Pringles and Cheetos from time to time. I usually let the kids pick out a fun snack when I shop and I always ask them what they like so that I buy thing they will eat and enjoy and groceries don’t go to waste.
How and when do you make time for your relationship with your husband? Remembering we were a couple before we had our kids and next to the Lord this is the most important relationship we have and will continue to have once our kids grow up. Communication is huge. I am so thankful I have an opportunity to talk to my husband several times a day and talk on the phone on his way home from work. We schedule date nights and go several times a month. Also, on Fridays my husband works from home and sometimes we will sneak in a lunch date. This is mostly possible because our kids can stay home now by themselves. 🙂 We love working on home renovation projects and building things for our home. This is so fun to do together and I enjoy learning how to build and use power tools. Most importantly it is staying connected everyday and being on the same page and whether we are home being a family, out doing our favorite family activity, just carving out time in the morning to have coffee together before the kids get up. Quality time together. We just enjoy being together and talking and dreaming about future things we want to do.
When do you clean?
I have daily chores and then I have rotating daily chores. I mostly clean in the morning and then do the evening kitchen clean up after dinner. My kids help big time with their daily chores.
Everyday Chores- General living room clean up morning and late afternoon
Kitchen- morning and evening
Bathroom- daily wipe down morning
Laundry-1 load everyday and the kids now do their own laundry once a week! WOOT!
Bedrooms- 10 mins every morning
Couple of times a week vacuum all the floors in the house.
When do you do laundry?
At least 1 load a day and usually start in the morning.
What is your bedtime routine?
Start at about 8:45-9pm getting everyone in the mindset of bedtime. The kids have their routines and then my husband and I start shutting down the house and head to bed.
Wash my face on a good day, brush teeth, face creams and then get in bed and read. I love to be asleep early. 🙂
When do the kids go to sleep? My daughter is a night owl but she also needs her sleep. She goes lights out between 10-10:30pm and is usually asleep around 11ish. She listens to an audio book.
My son is in bed by 9:30pm and usually asleep a little after 10pm
What is your nightly ritual after the kids go down? I am usually already in bed and asleep sometimes before them. HAHAHAH! It’s the truth.
When do you finally go to sleep? Between 9:30-10pm
If you could tell yourself one thing before you had kids what would it be? So many things……but I think it would be to be more patient, less anxious and to know that I am the mom that God created for my kids and my kids for me. Knowing the Lord is my greatest teacher and helper when it comes to parenting. I was swayed way to much by other peoples opinions and thoughts and it hindered my parenting for a long time.
What is your favorite time of day?
Mornings in the quiet still of the morning.
What is your favorite part of being a mom?
Watching my kids grow into the people the Lord made them to be and knowing I was blessed enough to be a part of that.
What is the hardest part of being a mom?
The hardest part of being a mom has to be seeing my children go through hard things. Balancing being there for them, praying with them and teaching them through those moments while allowing the Lord to grow them and to work through what is before them.
